Hi, I’m James Culhane, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. Prior to my career in mental health, I had the honor of serving over 10 years in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force Reserves. The experiences I had during my military career demonstrated the immense value of sound mental health and became the catalyst to continue my service to our community.

I hold a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelors in Health Sciences from the University of Central Florida, as well as certificates in Marriage and Family Therapy and Accelerated Resolution Therapy. I have helped patients in several mental health settings including private practice, community mental health and intensive outpatient counseling.

Anxiety, addiction, depression and overeating are all symptoms of a deeper problem, often associated with trauma in both its complex and simple forms. Working with both individuals and couples, I specialize in treating adult survivors of childhood trauma and abuse, those with PTSD, anxiety, depression and addiction. As there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health, I strive to provide the highest level of care through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, breathing techniques and other treatment methods.

I am committed to serving individuals from the perspective of their values, beliefs, and culture. While my treatments are evidenced-based and non-religious, I encourage patients to incorporate their own value-systems into their therapy. My treatment methods are accepting, accommodating and non-judgmental toward any lifestyle or way of being. I believe there is more than one path in life, and it is my responsibility to respect those of my patients while supporting their recovery.

Truma comes in many forms...

Sometimes it’s an obvious, impactful event that leaves mental scarring, other times it is more subtle events that compound over time to create unhelpful patterns in one’s life. No matter the kind of trauma, the impact on daily life and relationships can be profound. Fortunately, treatments such as Accelerated Resolutions Therapy (A.R.T.) have been proven to give significant results in a short amount of time. Trauma can require a comprehensive set of tools to release past hurt and replace it with lasting function and strength. With the right help you can release the past and take command of the rest of your life.

frequently asked questions

  • When insurance pays the bill, insurance dictates the type of treatment you receive. When you pay for services directly, you and your therapist choose that treatment that is best for you.
  • Insurance pays out more for some types of treatment over others, which means a therapists could become bias and choose higher paying treatments even when they are not the most effective for you.
  • You are limited to how often you can see your therapist. Typically, you are limited to once a week for a set number of weeks, even of more frequent visits might benefit you more.
  • A “diagnosis” must be made by the therapist and added to your medical record.
  • Many insurance companies still require you to pay a co-pay and/or meet a deductible before they start paying for your therapy.

At first may appear as if paying out-of-pocket is more expensive than using insurence, but when you consider the total treatment plan it is very possible that you will pay LESS in the long run. Patients seen by a cash-based provider get better faster which means they need less visits than those seen through insurance.

You and me, that’s it! When you use insurance to pay for mental health, your records are open to a third party for review. If you want maximum confidentiality for your mental health records, then using a cash-based therapist is a must!
